DUALISTIC FIELDS (2025)
SHADOW FIELDS / LIGHT FIELDS
24in x 24in - each piece
Mixed Media: Hand-Cut Found Editorial
and Acrylic on Canvas
My path to becoming an artist was forged through a season of profound darkness. Emerging into a life defined by light, I was drawn to the space where these two extremes meet. This diptych is a meditation on that duality—an exploration of the tension between struggle and triumph. Can we truly understand victory without first knowing the weight of the climb? Can rest be appreciated without endurance? What is light without darkness, or the sun without the moon?
Over the course of 13 months, I relentlessly crafted these works—grassy fields built blade by blade from hand-cut fragments. Before layering any pieces of paper, I inscribed hundreds of quotes directly onto the canvas, establishing language as the work’s structural foundation. These writings, drawn from theology, philosophy, and ancient spiritual traditions, act as catalysts, charging each piece with layers of meaning. While the hundreds of inscriptions remain concealed within the artwork—revealed only to its collectors—I will share one of my personal favorites that anchors the entire project. It is a quote by Carl Jung: “As far as we can discern, the sole purpose of human existence is to kindle a light in the darkness of mere being.”
The figures depicted display heterochromia—differently colored eyes believed by ancient cultures to grant the ability to see into both heaven and earth simultaneously. Paired with nude forms that represent the subconscious stripped of pretense, the work reflects a state of balance between the conscious and unconscious mind. Ultimately, these compositions honor the healing of the authentic self that emerges when we finally reconcile both shadow and light within us.
