SERIES // HART'S TAROT
XVII THE STAR (2026)
20in x 30in
Mixed Media: Hand-Cut Found Editorial
and Acrylic on Canvas
Reconstructing traditional Rider-Waite-Smith iconography, The Star sets thousands of hand-cut editorial fashion fragments against a sharp acrylic sky and border. While the blue expanse and dark outlines are painted, each element of the composition, from the central nude figure and golden stars to the detailed landscape, is built entirely of paper. Atop the fig tree, the sacred Scarlet Ibis is assembled fragment by fragment without obstacle. However, shaping rigid paper to mimic the fluid ripples of the central pool proved to be the single most technical challenge of my practice to date.
As the fourth and final piece in this tarot series, the work marks an unmistakable internal shift. Channeling the conscious choice explored in the previous card, The Lovers, I stepped away from a shared path to focus inward, reflecting the core healing energy of The Star.
Throughout the six-month creation process, daily meditation transformed my inner state while propelling the physical assembly of paper into a personal ritual of self-restoration.
The central figure, pouring dual terracotta pitchers onto land and into a pool of water, embodies the quiet replenishment required after a major life shift. Ultimately, the work reflects the steady process of rebuilding from within.
