In VI The Lovers, the classic Rider-Waite Smith Tarot iconography is built from thousands of hand-cut fragments of luxury editorial pages. While the blue background and black framing are rendered in sharp acrylic paint, the layered subjects take center stage, bringing contrasting textures into a singular, balanced composition.

This is the third Tarot card I have created over the last two years. Each piece takes roughly six months to complete; during this time, the boundaries between the canvas and my waking reality began to blur. The synchronicities have felt almost supernatural. The very day I finished layering the snake for the composition, a giant yellow snake approached me in the forest that same evening while I was visiting my partner. Later, finding fortune cookies filled with messages regarding love while actively working on the piece was just one of many strange encounters. While there are other occurrences from this period, the undeniable energy that came alive during this creation permanently altered my connection to the series.

The dual figures echo the classic tension between earthly connection and spiritual alignment, while the hand-cut textures of their skin emphasize the vulnerability required to stand fully exposed. The snake and the background elements are not mere landscape; they signify the dual forces of temptation and transformation—the catalyst for the choice that must be made. Ultimately, the interlocking paper pieces symbolize the threads that bind us to our chosen paths, showing how separate, contrasting fragments can be consciously guided into a singular harmony.
