When I completed Nudes in the Jungle, I knew the next movement in the series had to take place by the sea. The ocean has always been a cornerstone of my life—a childhood defined by California tides—but the inspiration for Nudes by the Bay was far from nostalgic. It was born from a harsh, systemic reckoning with truth: the realization that people are not always who they appear to be.

At the heart of the composition sits the moon, a silent witness to revelation. While it is natural to harbor unseen parts of ourselves, deception violates the fundamental trust of the human experience. The moon serves as a reminder that hidden truths, much like the tide, eventually rise to the surface.

The rocky shore embodies the precarious nature of our choices. A misstep on a jagged edge can wound us, while a slip on a smooth surface carries us into the unknown. Here, the three figures continue the Nudes in Nature exploration of healing, representing the body and mind in a state of transformation. The work invites a descent into the layered depth beneath the surface of the tide—a space where caution, courage, and discernment find their balance.
